Legal Assistant/Paralegal – Children’s Services and Public Law Department

FMT Solicitors Children’s Services and Public Law department are dedicated to providing families with the right support, advice and guidance when it comes to navigating the potential of a child being removed from a family’s care. We have an exciting opportunity for a legal assistant/paralegal who is both dedicated and passionate for children law to join our Peterborough office helping to assist the Head of Department and children lawyers represent parents who are involved in both pre-proceedings and care proceedings at a national level (we have offices in Leighton Buzzard, Peterborough and Manchester).

The successful candidate will ideally have experience working in either family/children law and share the same passion as the rest of the team to help grow and develop the department, whilst ensuring that those in need have access to justice. Full training and support is provided with regular meetings being held each week by the team.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing administrative assistance to 4 fee earners. Opening files and keeping client details up to date. Creating and submitting legal aid applications and submitting payments on account. Downloading, saving and time recording documents off the HMCTS portal. Submitting final bills to the Costs Draftsmen.
  • Diarising court orders and managing the diary. Liaising with clerks to book counsel for hearings and advocates meetings, drafting billing briefs. Sending bundles and court documents to clerks and counsel. Liaising with experts and providing the relevant documentation and ensuring appointments are booked and managed in the diary.
  • Drafting court applications and draft orders. Drafting statements and legal documents.
  • Taking calls from clients and ensuring that all instructions are documented. Sending documents to clients, including medical authority forms, client care information and court documents. Time recording emails in and fee earners attendance notes.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to liaise effectively with clients, colleagues, and external organisations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Outlook; strong organisational skills to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Good understanding of IT systems relevant to legal practice management.
  • Strong time management abilities to prioritise workload efficiently under tight deadlines.
  • Fluency in English with clear articulation and professional presentation of information
  • Demonstrated organisational skills to maintain accurate records and manage schedules effectively.
