Legal Assistant / Paralegal – Crime Department

FMT Solicitors’ Crime department is dedicated to providing expert legal representation in serious criminal matters and appeals, ensuring clients receive clear advice and robust support throughout what can often be complex and challenging proceedings. We have an exciting opportunity for a Legal Assistant / Paralegal to join our Manchester office, supporting fee earners in serious crime and appeals work.

The successful candidate will ideally have some experience in criminal defence work and an interest in developing their knowledge within this area. The role involves assisting with case preparation, liaising with clients, counsel and third parties, and supporting the team in delivering a high standard of client care. You will be working within a collaborative and supportive team environment with opportunities to develop your skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing administrative and legal support to fee earners within the Crime department, particularly in serious crime and appeals matters.
  • Undertaking legal research to support case preparation.
  • Assisting with the preparation of cases, including drafting correspondence and organising case documentation.
  • Liaising with clients, taking instructions and ensuring accurate attendance notes are recorded.
  • Instructing counsel and liaising with chambers to support case progression.
  • Instructing and liaising with experts, ensuring all relevant documentation is provided.
  • Corresponding with courts and other third parties to progress matters efficiently.
  • Maintaining accurate records and ensuring files are kept up to date in line with firm procedures.

Skills:

  • Some experience in criminal defence work is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to liaise effectively with clients, counsel, courts and colleagues.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Good attention to detail and ability to work accurately under pressure.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general IT systems used within legal practice.
  • Professional and client-focused approach, with the ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion.
